What is Custom Compounding?

Custom compounding is a method of creating customized medications for an individual’s unique needs. Our compounding pharmacy creates custom medications that are not available commercially. Oftentimes, retail prescriptions have secret allergens lurking in the base formula. We compound these same medications without the allergen. We also create custom delivery methods that offer a better way to receive your medication, including creams, capsules, topical sprays, and more.

At our compounding pharmacy, we can customize medications for each individual patient and your unique needs. Questions? Call us at (616) 974-9792 to speak to one of our pharmacists!

Bio-Identical Hormones

Custom Compounded Natural hormones have the exact same chemical structure as human hormones. The body recognizes them and allows them to mimic the function of the hormones the body produces on its own. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may be useful for relieving the symptoms of a variety of conditions common among women of all ages.

Dysregulation of the body's hormone balance can result in:

  • Menopause
  • Hot Flashes
  • Night Sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Painful Sexual Intercourse
  • Decreased Libido
  • Infertility
  • Post-Partum Depression
  • Weight Gain
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibrocystic Breasts
  • Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)
  • Irregular Menstrual Cycle

Low-Dose Naltrexone

Studies have demonstrated the opioid blocking drug, Naltrexone, has very potent anti-inflammatory effects when used in low doses. Low Dose Naltrexone (in doses of 0.5 to 4.5 mg at bedtime), block the Toll Like Receptor Type 4 (TLR4 receptors) on the glial cells in the central nervous system. When these receptors become activated, the glial cells release a myriad of inflammatory cytokines. These cytokines are responsible for the auto-immune response seen in many conditions including:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Crohn's Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Chronic Lyme Disease
  • Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS formerly known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or RSD)

Veterinary

Veterinary medicine compounding from Keystone Compounding Pharmacy may offer you a better way to medicate your pet. Custom medication compounding allows you to give your pet the exact dose they need, in a dosage form that works best for you and your pet. It may also help reduce the daily stress of medication time. For example, we can provide your dog's medication in the form of tasty custom-flavored liquid. These treats mask the taste (and smell) of your pet's medication. Ask your veterinarian if compounding medication is right for your pet or give us a call. We can help make your pet healthier and your life a little easier.

  • Topical gels, creams, foams, or sprays which may be applied to the site of the pain
  • Custom-flavored lozenges that dissolve in your mouth

Hospice & Palliative Care

Hospice patients have specialized, individuals needs. Compounding can provide personalized care to a patient in an end-of-life situation. Because many hospice patients are unable to swallow, compounding can provide medications in a variety of different dosage forms.

Easy-to-Administer Dosage Forms:

  • Suppositories
  • Transdermal Creams
  • Troches
  • Lollipops

As compounding pharmacists, we work closely with your doctor to suggest therapies that will work for a patient with a wide variety of unique conditions, to alleviate their pain and discomfort. Compounded medications are often the perfect choice for palliative care patients and allow for a customized approach to a patient's condition and response to treatment.

Dr. Miller's specialization in pain management and transdermal drug delivery provides Keystone Compounding Pharmacy with unique expertise beyond what is typically found in compounding pharmacies and makes us well suited in palliative care needs.

Podiatry

Onychomycosis, more commonly known as toenail and fingernail fungus, is a widespread and often embarrassing fungal condition. We can work with your podiatrist to custom formulate an anti-fungal for your condition. Common medications we create for podiatrists are for toenail/fingernail fungus and wart medication.

Mitochondrial Disease

Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less and less energy is generated within the cell. Cell injury and even cell death follow. If this process is repeated throughout the body, whole systems begin to fail, and the life of the person in whom this is happening is severely compromised. For those with mitochondrial disorders, added vitamins and cofactors may be useful. We work with prescribers specializing in the treatment of Mitochondrial disease by compounding pure vitamin forms into proper dose and dosage form (liquid suspension and G Tube additives).

Men's Health

Your compounding pharmacist can tell you that hormone replacement therapy isn't just for women - many men can benefit from it too! Recent research has identified several common physical and emotional symptoms experienced by men as they age, including:

  • Decreased Libido, Muscle Mass, Strength, and Stamina
  • Impotence
  • Osteoporosis
  • Heart Disease
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

Termed "andropause" or "male menopause," these symptoms are related to decreasing levels of testosterone or increasing levels of estrogen.

Your natural balance may be restored through supplementation of the hormone testosterone, which has been shown to relieve the symptoms of andropause. The value of hormone replacement through compounding is its ability to fit your unique body and hormone levels, resulting in better accuracy and a healthier balance.
